Jim McKee: New county seat, new hotels in Cedar County

Like many Nebraska counties, Cedar County has moved its county seat from a corner to a central location, and like every county capital, one of its first enterprises was a hotel. The following year the St. James post office opened about a mile west of the present site of St. James. The year 1858 also saw the first county courthouse constructed at St. James in the form of a 30-by-40-foot, two-story, oak timber, $2,000 building. Because of its transportation connection, St. Helena began growing faster than St. James, and in 1869 an election moved the county seat from St. James to St. Helena, which incorporated as a village in 1871. On Jan. 5, 1916 the frame Grand Hotel burned, at which point only one other hotel, the Mid-West, remained in business.
