Woman and five children dead in hotel fire in Southwest Michigan

BERRIEN COUNTY, MI -- A 26-year-old woman and five children, all part of the same family, died in a hotel fire south of Benton Harbor that filled the building with smoke and flames. Berrien County authorities said the children who died ranged in age from 2 through 10. Berrien County sheriff's deputies said 27 rooms were occupied at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation and a state police fire marshal will be assisting Berrien County sheriff's personnel with the investigation. According to the Berrien County Sheriff's Office, dispatch received a 911 call around 1:45 a.m. on Saturday. The sheriff's office reports a family of six — a mother and her five children, ages two through ten — were killed in the fire. Preliminary estimates from the sheriff's office show that about 90 percent of the rooms at the Cosmo Extended Living Hotel sustained smoke, fire or water damage. The Michigan State Police Fire Marshall Division will assist the Berrien County Sheriff's Office to determine a cause and origin to the massive fire.
